I'm so sorry this happened to you and the girls. Having living in both rural and urban India, I have experienced or heard about many similar issues. It is sad but an unfortunate truth in so many places. The place I taught in rural Bihar-- two Indian teachers came to teach before me and were raped to drive them away from teaching the poor children anything. They didn't do this to me because I was a foreigner only.

I don;t know about Kolkata, but I know in Delhi that different neighborhoods can be vastly different. In one neighborhood there may be closed-minded gossiping people who get into other's business and cause scenes in the streets, while in a different neighborhood people "mind their own business" (to a degree!).

I haver also actually made a video of a man screaming at me and my co-workers in Delhi. A student from Africa invited me and two other teachers to his home for dinner (the two other teachers were a male and female Indian). A man saw us 3 going to an African college students house and proceeded to harass us and then call the police, who (Like in your story) barged into our home for a couple of hours-- to find us eating dinner and watching the Pogo channel! We were all forced to show school/work IDs to "verify" our identities, since apparently it would just not be allowed for people (especially women!) to consort with some African college students.

Please remember that there are a lot of people out there that support you. Please let us know if any help is needed1

This is two years old, from before I added 13 children to my life... Bubbi has taught me a lot, and i'll blog about that soon, as my adventures with her are part of my strength. Bubbi is my cow. She is about five years old and just had her first calf, Shiva. It is really hard to explain my relationship to my cow, except that I knew I wanted a cow. I wanted a cow because I love to take pictures of cows, and i imagined that my cow would have a lot to say. I'm listening, and invite you to meet and get to know Bubbi.

This is the first Album. I won't even try to put the story in order, but more like the blog -- little scenes.... And some will just be random, pictures I love and want to share. Partly this is just because time is so little, and pictures so many. I started it 29th December but I've been adding to it.....
